How Can I Get This Degree?
An early childhood education degree from Post University is intended for students interested in receiving a well-rounded curriculum in the development and application of age-appropriate education for young children. This program is designed to prepare students for immediate employment in school districts, private and charter schools, and even the corporate world. Along with studying psychology, child development, educational approaches to literature, math, science and social studies, students will also have the opportunity to engage in a practicum, or hands-on experience. Other required courses will include English Composition, Literature, World Civilizations, and Algebra. A current Red Cross First Aid Certification is required for successful completion of this degree. Before students can begin a program, they must first submit enrollment applications, which include a high school or college transcript or a GED. Also, transfer students are required to have a grade point average of at least a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale and grades of a C- or above for credits to be transferred to Post University.
What Can I Do With This Degree?
Students with this degree generally immediately enter the academic environment as teachers for public school districts, private or charter schools, and even corporations. As a teacher, these professionals will create and follow approved lesson plans regarding their specific subject area, engage students in an educational environment, and foster their love of learning. Before students can be hired as teachers, all states require them to become licensed. This will include testing in basic skills, like reading and writing, as well as proficiency in their chosen subject, like social studies or science. Also, many states require teachers to complete a certain number of continued education courses in order to renew these licenses. Private schools generally are not required to meet the state mandates regarding licensure. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this profession is expected to grow steadily and as fast as the average career. The average salary for early education teachers is generally around $47,000 per year, but this will depend on locality, experience level, and employer.
