Education has become increasingly important around the world, as globalization has allowed students from every type of nation to become educated in ways they could only dream of a few decades ago. As this has occurred, it becomes important to look at the best universities in the world, the majority of which are located in the “Western” nations, but this is beginning to shift as the world concepts of what constitutes Western shifts as well. Thus far, the top 20 universities in the world include schools in the United States, England, and Canada, but the 22nd university is the University of Tokyo in Japan, while the 24th is the University of Hong Kong in China.

Prospective students and government policy makers around the world rely on statistics from educators who determine what the best universities currently are. While the United States has begun to drag behind many European and Asian nations in their high school rankings, the nation still holds 27 percent of the 200 top universities, with the United Kingdom trailing slightly behind. Students and faculty from nations around the world are eager to receive lists of the best universities to determine which ones they should transfer to or attend, the result of which has been clearly noted throughout history.

Currently, the top 5 list is comprised of Harvard, Cambridge, Yale, University College London, and Imperial College London, nearly all of which were founded in the nineteenth century (Imperial College was founded in 1907, narrowly missing the nineteenth century mark). Education has rapidly expanded since the beginning of the twentieth century, and as online education continues to take off, more students from impoverished nations are now being offered the opportunity to study in nearly any degree program. Lists of the best universities in the world continue to be important for these students because they continue to give them hope for a future that does not involve remaining in poverty. Furthermore, online education has allowed many students in these nations to experience distance learning classes offered at many of the top universities around the world, some even free for users (although they do not involve college credit).

The best universities in the world are slowly changing to reveal more modern universities that have emerged in the past few decades, although the more prestigious Ivy League schools of the United States and Great Britain will continuously vie for the top positions.

By Claire Webber

As the study of Agriculture and Agriculture Science continues to grow, so does the world’s population. Today there are more than 8 billion hungry mouths out there to feed, and each one is going to rely on someone to oversee the growing of their food. Agriculture is surely a science that will NEVER fall by the wayside; our lives depend on it.

So you know you’ve chosen a great field of study when: the entire survival of the species depends on your science? Too true! But the future may hold more than the growth of food. As we continue to look for alternative sources of fuel scientists are increasingly examining bio-fuels as an alternative. And you know what that mean – somebody is going to have to grow those fuels. Here are a few headlines from the news that are underlining Agricultures importance in today’s world climate and economy.

Job security? You bet. And increasingly more organizations are seeking out qualified Ag students for their expertise. According to recent news that comes from Auburn, Alabama, the Peace Corps is seeking Agriculture majors to help meet its needs. According to reports in February of this year The Corps is only meeting 74% of its agribusiness goals and has been recruiting hard for students and recent graduates who studied in Agriculture.

And speaking of jobs, jobs, and more jobs, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization recently released a report detailing the possibility that as many as 10 million jobs could be created and dedicated to forestry and biodiversity in the next few years. The organization is pushing for countries to take action to curb deforestation and invest in more green jobs. Just another indicator that the international political climate is increasingly coloring itself ‘green’ in this revolution and sustainable agriculture development is at its center.

Work on the home front. Recently The Epoch Times reported some promising news from the heart of the country. New York has again announced more dedication to the green movement. According to the report $2 million dollars was recently given to the city from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a grant to promote new jobs in horticulture and forestry.

Work abroad. And when you started you thought that Ag degree was only good on the home front. Here’s more evidence of the international green movement. Agriculture Secretary of the Philippines, Arthur Yap, recently underlined the countries new focus on agriculture related jobs as part of a national commitment to generate jobs.

Reports show that agriculture jobs in India are increasing slowly as well. The nation which has recently been the scene for much job outsourcing in the past few years continues to be an agriculture super power. Government spokesmen recently outlined plans to improve growth in the Ag sector, underlining their commitment to maintaining their place in food production.

As the global economy continues to evolve and shift many jobs seem to be in flux, especially at the moment. But there’s one thing that will always remain certain: at some point, no matter who you are, you’re going to have to put some kind of food on your plate and more than likely some kind of fuel in your car. The population of the world continues to grow, as does our fuel needs. Agriculture studies are proving to have the keys necessary to unlocking many of our social and political problems.

Let’s face it: sometimes studying isn’t what we look forward to at the end of a long day. But this necessary evil can be made a little easier if you stick to the following few little tips. Interestingly enough you may find that you already knew some of these. In that case this may be the opportunity to let them sink in and take them to heart. Please get out your number 2 pencils.

Eliminate distractions. Absolutely feel like you need a glass of milk and some chocolate chip cookies right now? Well then what may surprise you is that you should get it! Unless you plan to reward yourself with a tempting treat after you finish all your hard work, you should fulfill all your immediate desires as soon as possible.

Eliminating distractions can also mean getting all the stuff done that could possibly cloud up your mind when you’re trying to get down to work. Hungry? Eat. Sleepy? Sleep. Do all the things that need to get done and then study. Just remember to give yourself enough time to really learn what you need to learn.

Chunking. I know mom always said that you shouldn’t wait to the last minute to study. Well, mom was right! Committing random facts to short term memory may be possible if you wait till the day before the test, but in order to learn information and store it permanently in your memory you need more time.

Chunking means breaking down whatever you have to learn into bite size tidbits that your brain can digest easily. Do a little each time you sit down and start well in advance of that test. By the time the dreaded ‘night before’ rolls around you’ll find that you’ve really done all the hard work already.

Find your happy place. Where you choose to study can be just as important as how. If your roommate is blasting away at little green men on the television in the same room, you may not be able to concentrate on that 15th century French literature. On the flip side, a library can sometimes be just as distracting to the next guy. It doesn’t matter where you choose to make your sacred studying dojo, what matters is that you’re being honest with yourself. Sneak off to a closet down the hall or climb on to the roof, just make sure it is a productive environment for you.

Know what you need to study. Another no-brainer here, but spending useless time cramming down information that you don’t need can kill your brain and wear you out fast. Make sure you ask your professors specifically what will be on the test and then take the time to separate what you do know from what you don’t. There’s no sense in going over and over information that you already have committed to permanent memory.

Think out of the box. Finally, do whatever you have to do to keep yourself engaged. If you divide your information into flash cards and talk that cute little co-ed next door into playing strip-for-knowledge then I guarantee you will learn faster than you ever thought possible. Think out of the box and keep yourself motivated – remember it’s your education and it is important.

With online education on the rise, it is no surprise that the niches are becoming more and more defined with every passing month. There are schools that cater exclusively to MBA-seeking business professionals and schools that cater to potential fashion students. Now, the best university for the A.F.L.-C.I.O (umbrella group for the nation’s labor unions) members and their families is currently in the works and expects to debut later this year.

It was only a matter of time before such a school came into existence, but the recent announcement for the college that is “tentatively named” College for Working Families, seeks to provide an education to the families of union workers through the help of online schools. The first of its kind, this university will be the only one of its type to cater exclusively to this set genre of students. When it figuratively “opens its doors” in the fall of 2010, the school plans to offer courses in criminal justice, education, and health sciences to members of the labor unions and their families.

The College for Working families will literally be the best university for the families of the members of the unions. Never before have they been given to enroll in a school that is for students of similar backgrounds and work ethic, additionally cheaper than most traditional and for-profit institutions. The Princeton Review and Penn Foster subsidiary are both partners of the school due both to their widespread reputation as well as their wide expertise in distance learning environments.

Many of the classes the school will offer are meant to stress the retention of learning, and focus on new ways to encourage student learning. The many statistics on the families and members of the target audience have revealed that such a program is in dire need for many labor union members. It is amazing that a similar school has not been enacted in recent years to deliver the same education to families who do not have the means to earn one at all.

While some may criticize the program due to its experimental basis for enrollment thus far, as well as its exclusivity requirements, which many critics would not be afraid to call unconstitutional. However, the school is still in the beginning stages and strives to bring a greater education to students who may not have every opportunity available to them. While the school will one day offer degrees to rival the current online schools, it is satisfied for the moment at offering a small amount of bachelor’s degrees to its potential students. The best universities in the nation have developed from similar backgrounds as the education process is an evolving process.
